How ill-advised would it be to ask my firm to move to a different office before this summer?

For context, I want to end up in city 2 because 1. family moving there; 2. like it better. Current office is more grade selective than office in city 2, both offices fairly large (though city 1 office is massive relative to city 2 office).

I guess no issue waiting it out to see if I get the offer before asking, but ideally I'd just go to city 2 this summer

Think it depends on how big that office is / how remote-work friendly the firm is.

At my firm, they hire for SA program with the idea to fill specific practice group needs. They may hire 20 summer associates in New York--that office has multiple practice groups. At my firm, if you got hired for New York and asked to transfer to Austin, they'd laugh you out. That office has like 25 lawyers and they only do tech, IP, and renewables--they might hire 3 summer associates. I'd do research on how many lawyers are in the office that you'd like to move to as well as how many summers they generally take. If it's a fairly large office you're probably good. If it's really a great deal smaller, not so sure it's smart to ask if you want to make sure you get an offer. If it's a firm that's basically totally remote, they might not care at all (but there's not too many of those yet).

Any idea how hard this would be post-clerkship? Specifically considering requesting a DC to Chicago switch at one of the firms with a major presence in both for family reasons.
