Come on Kirkland, break the wheel

It's not gonna happen... but if I were Kirkland, I would use this chance to create permanent market separation. Come in guns blazing with something like $260,000 for first years. Everyone knows they can afford it. Only a small fraction of firms would be willing to match. Those few firms will be worshipped by law students and laterals alike. Kirkland would be immortalized in law firm lore. There'd be two scales: the "Milbank" scale for TTT law firms, and the "Kirkland" scale for the true white shoes.
Come on Kirkland, don't just play the Game of Thrones, break the wheel.

Kirkland has been reducing its EOY bonus multipliers for quite a while and, for the first time ever, just stopped paying any above-market premium to sub-2000 billers last month.
Kirkland will pay obscenely to keep true rock stars and to hire laterals when it needs them. It's not going to "SHATTER" anything like it used to when it was much, much smaller and not in a dominant position in certain spaces like it already is today.

Why cough out $$$ when they don't have to? Human nature is greedy, not generous, when it comes to $$$.

Well, Milbank just coughed up quite a bit even though it "didn't have to." Kirkland is capable of taking it to an entirely different level.

50 or so firms (including Milbank) could easily match that. There’s no point raising a lot more if you will always have to compete with the same firms for talent.

Anyone who thinks Kirkland would do this doesn't understand the current culture of the Kirkland partnership. They will never be like Milbank or DPW. They match all market compensation moves, presumably without even thinking about it given the wealth of the firm, but that's the extent of it. They have no interest in being (associate) compensation leaders, ever, anymore, outside of using very targeted insane lateral offers to poach people from other firms (now that's consistent with typical Kirkland culture!).

Is no one going to acknowledge the awesome Game of Thrones / Wheel of Time crossover potential of this post?
Screw Kirkland, I want Lews Therin Telamon and Daenerys Targaryen emailing me my raise memo.

Kirkland is too busy spending all their money on laterals. They aren't going to shatter the market anymore. xoxohth
