Desk lawyer @ HF. All in comp was $475. Mostly weighted to bonus. Some of it starts being deferred after you clear a certain threshold

Mid-senior comp is 300-450 all in for most fund formation/AGC roles. On the low end you can expect 200 base/100 bonus. Source: worked at a HF.

Anyone able to opine on the best/easiest path to landing one of these in-house fund roles?

What's your schedule look like? What was your background prior (practice group, years)?

Hours are 9-5 no weekends but could get worse if the market turns. But in general there are few emergencies and everything so far can be punted to the next day.

Would RX or fund formation be a better practice area to exit to a fund. Of course RX would be more towards the credit side but didn’t know if fund formation opens up a lot of desk lawyer opportunities as well.

Assistant GC (senior level associate class level) here, low $500k all in comp, most of that comes in the form of year end bonus or annual payments related to management fees.

Hours are all over the place, some weeks are 9-7PM, while others could be much longer depending on deal flow, especially if deal is overseas.

For exit options, I think fund formation would suit you well, but that could all be dependent on the type of fund/manager your would be going to.

Thanks for this discussion - super helpful. I know HF/PE/VC jobs, particularly funds that have a need for in-house counsel, are mostly in NYC or the Bay. Any insight on the quality of opportunities elsewhere? Chicago/Southern regions specifically.

Also interested in this. What is in-house legal at a16z, GV or similar making? I had a recruiter once drop the possibility of carry at GV (EC/VC mid here) to push me to make the move but probably not going to be in significant amounts early on.

Do you like it more than practicing law at a firm? And what does your upside look like after a couple of years?

In Chicago, work for VC fund. Make mid-300s. Mostly 9-5

Roughly what class year? Similar comp here (for PE fund though), hours a bit longer but still reasonable, Class of 2015.

I like the cadence/pace better here. I liked the substance better at a firm. Tbh not sure what my upside looks like because there are so few of us and it's very dependent on your position inside the specific firm (and where the market is).
