Career pivot - IP Lit Pharma -> ???

Hi all,

Going to fudge some details here, just in case.

Senior associate at a boutique (7th year), doing IP lit, making market, all signs point to partnership next year.

Work life balance is a big struggle, and partnership is going to make it worse, probably.

Been applying in-house for about 2 years, struck out everywhere. I have to stay in DC for family reasons. Can't go gov because of prior decisions :P. Though they tell me maybe in a year or two will be enough of a passage of time.

Is the only way out, through? Bank away cash and retire early? Only other options that are reasonably available seem to be soft IP lit (any better?) or tech trans.

Just aiming for a reasonable work life balance here.

Former IP lit pharma associate now working in-house in biotech/pharma.

Sounds like your goal is WLB, so I'd recommend you keep applying to positions while doing your current job given your good partnership prospects.

Have you told your pharma network that you are interested in in-house roles?

At my employer, attorneys tend to come from firms who we already work with. Also, as you are probably aware, in-house lit roles are few and far between, so if you're okay with a broader generalist role, I'd suggest expanding your scope as well.
