How long before I'm able to lateral to a different market?

I recently entered private practice for a niche finance practice after working at a state agency regulating this area for seven years. I'm enjoying the work, but it's becoming more and more clear that the politics in this state are not getting any better and me and my wife are concerned about SCOTUS decisions RE: Roe v Wade, Obergefell, etc.
How long would I have wait until lateraling to a different secondary market that I have ties to (think Richmond / DC) or primary market that I do not have ties to (NYC / Chicago)? Searches show that firms are hiring in my practice area in these cities. Or would it be better to talk to my current firm about making the move to these other areas, but staying with the firm?
