Just passed a decade in law. First BigLaw and now in-house. What are your tips on career longevity?

Things that I've realized:

(1) Work for someone that you respect (applies to both BL and in-house).
(2) In BigLaw, just did enough to meet hours and hit the bonus requirement.
(3) In-house, figure out (a) who is motivated by power and (b) who is motivated by doing the work. Work (or say the right things) accordingly depending on their motivation.

WHat happens if you're given work from someone you don't respect? Any tips on decreasing workload from a partner you don't like working with?

Find one or two major rainmakers in your office that you like working with.

Do good work for them and tell them that you like working for and learning from them. When the partner you don't like working for comes to you with work, point out that you're slammed with work from Major Rainmaker 1 or 2, thank them for thinking of you, and keep your mouth shut if the partner you don't like keeps asking.
