Why do firms have 3L clerks

Several friends of mine started clerking part-time at the firms they summered at. I’m curious why firms have 3Ls working part time, given how corporate associates are pretty much universally slammed? From my experience this summer and from what they’ve told me, it seems like the time it takes just to get them up to speed, the increased turnaround time, and the lower quality work product completely undermines the ostensible benefit of having more hands on deck. Yet, most of them were asked to come on as part-time clerks because of how slammed corporate associates are. I’m wondering if any current mid level or senior associates can speak to this, particular in the context of the current market since it seems as though my friends in these positions are also pretty dumbfounded.
