How common is it for a firm to be willing to match competing offer bonus for retention. Do you need to actually have an offer in hand?
Also, how much does it depend on class year?

I’m also interested in this. I have heard anecdotal reports of my V50 firm matching signing bonuses to retain associates.
I’ve also heard that it’s generally not a great idea to accept a counter-offer when you give notice, so I’m interested if anyone has thoughts on the wisdom of accepting a retention bonus after giving your two weeks notice.

+1 also interested. In your next review or EOY, can you just raise that have been in contact with other firms and are strongly considering jumping unless offered some sort of retention? In the most friendly way possible...

Yeah... I could see that sort of hostage situation backfiring spectacularly. "Good for you. We wish you the best. Would three months be enough for you to nail down one such position? And please feel free to use me as a reference!

"
I'd wait until I had an offer in hand.

Good point haha. Any experience/seen anyone successfully negotiate a class year bump on the basis of a prior degree?
