Requesting office change to different market

Currently working in Chicago office of a big law firm. I'd like to switch to NYC office given my fiance's job offer. How do folks navigate this type of ask? Is it possible?

That's as good a reason as ever to request an office change. Some folks directly ask the partner(s) they work with to see what can be done, others reach out to HR/Recruiting to get the ball rolling. Personally, I think reaching out to a senior partner in your office that knows you would be a better choice. Really firm-dependent.
In the age of COVID, where you sit really doesn't mean much at all. Lots of folks are still back where they retreated to when the pandemic began. Hell, you could probably just go WFH in NYC for a while (after notifying the people you work with) until things settle down and then "formally" transfer later.
