H-1Bs and Green Cards

I'm an international student with a full-time offer from a NY V20, and I want to see what's on the table for me when it comes to possibly staying in the US long-term.
I know that many firms have H-1B policies in which they will sponsor/apply for the H-1B Visa at least twice: once during the OPT period, and, if that fails, once again while posting you to an international office. Green card policies seem to vary more -- in general, it looks like firms will begin sponsoring once you enter your third year with them.
It's been really hard to find information about this stuff, so I was wondering if any posters could chime in with their stories about how they navigated this process, and how they raised the green card conversation -- it seems like such a taboo subject.
