I said Aspen once and got spat on.

If you're at a t14 they are just (somewhat awkwardly) making conversation, assuming everyone who wants Biglaw has something lined up. At a lower-ranked school they are definitely trying to show off.

Why isn't there an all of the above option

This is going to blow your mind but as an adult, one of the first questions people are going to ask when they meet you for the first time is “and what do you do?”

I took an investment banking gig at Pierce and Pierce. The highlight was when the VPs took us to Dorsia.

Ah, so you're the boomer who still hangs around campus

I think most of your peers will ask not out of directed curiosity, but rather as a conversation starter since OCI is a big deal for a lot of folks and it's something that most students went through. Y'all went through the ringer and it makes sense that you'll be asked whether you made it out alive.

Of course, there will be folks that ask because they're insecure and want to dick-measure, but don't take it personally.

All of the options are possible. Depends on who is asking. Majority probably no ulterior motive, but some absolutely want to try and dunk or are being nosy.

I never asked anyone about their summer job because I just knew some insecure twit would interpret it as an attempt to humble-brag about my own, which was at a firm generally considered more preftigious than most of my classmates'. If someone asked me, I'd say "a firm in [secondary market city name]," and only named it if directly asked. I'm sure some people thought I was being rude and others thought I was I was embarrassed about it. The whole thing was ridiculous, and I wish I hadn't bothered.

It don't think that's quite right. More like, it's an opportunity to assert dominance. Like poster above, I'm with a firm more prestigious/selective/whatever than 9/10 of my classmates at a T14. I'm sure when they broach the topic with their V10 offer they think the odds are good that they're going to dunk. I almost feel bad deflating their sense of achievement when they try to humblebrag about their offer. "Oh, yeah, I'm happy about it I guess. Where'd you end up?"..."Oh. Congrats." It's like, buddy, you brought it up.

I mean, I just like to know things about my classmates? I'm not interested in asserting dominance or bragging or whatever. If they're at a "more prestigious" firm, good for them! If they're at a "less prestigious" firm, good for them too!

God, why can’t law students just be normal people who know how to make conversation?

“Do you know what you’re doing next summer” is a pretty normal conversation topic when you’re all in a graduate program where the point is to get a job.

Back in the days of in-person CLEs, asking the person sitting next to you where they worked was a normal conversation starter.
