I don’t have any insight into this particular case, but Zoom/remote SA structure made it incredibly easy to fly under the radar. There was definitely a temptation to “do nothing” (or close to it) since it felt like nobody was monitoring you. Perhaps this person got lured into thinking that nobody would notice if they logged off and chilled on their sofa all day.
I guess their firm didn't have, like, a mid-summer review? I'm just amazed there was no "come to Jesus" moment for them to realize that this wasn't a sustainable approach. Hell, I was more paranoid during my remote summer, because I couldn't see what everyone else was doing and pace myself accordingly.
there was a mid-summer review, but no idea what happened.

Yeah this entire situation seems weird, then. I also wonder what the source of the story is--it seems like a jerk move/violation of privacy (in spirit) if anyone but the student in question "broke" it.

I have heard that this summer told others what happened when asked if they would be attending the end of summer party

Props to them in that case (I guess). It is still crazy to me that a top firm somehow would not have a pulse on an SA doing nothing even through a mid-summer review.

You’re presuming that they cared to do anything to stop the SA from hanging themselves.

Interesting response which I suspect may be correct.

I’ve heard differing stories about this person and given WFH it’s a more difficult than usual to determine the exact cause. However, while maybe something was signaled that this was a cold offer instead of a no offer, in all respects it was at least effectively a no offer.

While cold offers are unfortunate in their own respects, it is just the firm telling you that you should look elsewhere and that you may not have a long term career here. People have in fact accepted cold offers without much effect in the end though most take the hint and look elsewhere.

My understanding is that there was ultimately no offer for this summer to accept and they were not invited to the end of summer events / offer party. Maybe the firm is allowing her to tell other employees that she received an offer for employment prospects and the firm will not have to disclose it as a no offer on NALP. Given the extreme hesitation of firms to disclose any no-offers, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the ultimate outcome given the mutual benefit. However, this would ultimately fall somewhere in the middle between a cold and no offer.
Would a firm be required to report as a no-offer someone who was offered a summer position but for whatever reason did not start the summer program? Or would a no-offer only obtain if the SA actually completed the summer program then was not invited back at the end?
I would say no to this because that person who never started the summer program was never a summer associate. In effect, by never starting performance (and never receiving pay), that person rejected the offer to join the summer associate class or something idk

Wouldn’t be surprised if this was the case. I have also heard this person did not have a good sense for social cues which probably didn’t help their case.

Obviously not, if they didn't pick up on the fact that doing literally no work was likely to be a problem. But I'm not sure it's really fair to judge someone's ability to pick up on social cues when every single contact anyone has had with them has been remote.

Anyone willing to share at which firm this happened?

Not sure why it really matters (unless you too are planning to do no work during your SA but still want a return offer), but . . .

This apparently occurred at a V5 firm. We can take WLRK right off the table since they don’t hire people like this (and they are too small and secretive for firm gossip to end up here on TLS anyways). S&C was in person for much of the summer (I think), which to my mind, makes this scenario unlikely. Cravath — maybe — but the SAs I know there are universally kind of gunner-y personalities.

That leaves Skadden and Latham (which I had no idea was “V5” until I looked up the rankings just now). Either seems plausible.

I don't think Skadden had an end of summer party but I could be wrong, I know that Latham did though

Skadden let local offices decide how much in-person programming to have in the latter half of their summers. Some had quite a bit, though AFAIK no one was required to do anything in-person. I don't know what New York did, though.

I know someone no offered at a V100. The reason given for the no offer was work product.

I also know of someone at a V100 who was not given an offer because the firm said they weren't sure of their hiring needs and would only know in winter.
