Top Law Schools

I have narrowed my 2L SA search to Cooley nyc or Latham in Palo Alto. I am completely torn. For background, I want to do emerging companies work and came to law school specifically for that.

I’m drawn to Cooley nyc bc seems like a growing office along with the nyc growing tech scene (although I’m a little worried about effects of covid). I wish my offer was for Palo Alto but perhaps I can transfer?

Palo Alto still seems to be Mecca for that type of work and Latham is Latham. Latham really seems to be growing its emco practice as well even if it’s not necessarily “known” for that type of work. Thoughts??

FWIW, i know a cooley associate who easily transferred from boston office to another office without difficulty.

Probably goes without saying but not all office location transfers are easy to do at Cooley. e.g. Ton of people who have been trying for years to move from Palo Alto to SF.

How long were they working before they transferred?

Very easy to transfer offices at Cooley, although as always ymmv.

But this just comes down to where you want to live. If you want to be in NY, Cooley NYC is probably tops in NY for ECVC and tech work. If you want to be in the Bay Area, Latham is totally fine for that sort of work as well.

I'm in a similar situation - Cooley sf vs. Latham la. Want ECVC and equally happy to live in either city. Which are you leaning towards?

If you actually want to do ECVC, not sure if this is even a competition between the two. I’d understand Cooley LA vs Latham SF/SV, but Cooley SF vs Latham LA bends incredibly in Cooley’s favor if you want ECVC

Not sure I would agree. I have been across from Latham LA on more than a handful of deals this past year and the pace has picked up. I agree Cooley will have more to offer but I don't think this is a hands down, so obvious kind of choice.

Nah, this is clearly in Cooley's favor if it's purely which firm/office is a top dog in EC/VC (if you want to live in LA instead of SF, that's obviously a way different consideration). Latham LA might be doing well but Cooley SF (and every other Bay Area tech firm) is 120% drowning in EC/VC work top to bottom.

Can you ask Cooley recruiting if they'll let you do Palo Alto for full-time? Doubt they'd yank your offer or hold it against you---this isn't an unusual issue/question.
