For those of you posting about your 2022 SAs on LinkedIn…

Did your firm ask you to do it? Seeing so many posts from incoming SAs at a bunch of firms, I’m starting to feel like I should, but the firm I’m going to hasn’t sent us anything…

No I think this is a new trend and I think law students just want to do it. I'm sure the firms don't care. I haven't been practicing all that long, but when I was in law school no one ever made a big announcement on LinkedIn about getting accepted to law school or which firm they chose at OCI.

We were also told to be a little more hush hush about it so you didn't alienate your classmates that didn't have a great OCI experience and were still searching for employment.

Seems like zoomer mentality. Avoid at all costs.

I would never in a million years post that and judge people who wax poetic.

Could anyone familiar with Kirkland weigh in on this? I see sooooo many K&E posts with identical wording.

White & Case seems to have a banner picture ready-made for these announcements.

I have no issues with those who choose to "announce" in advance, but not my style personally. Just update the LI when you start there.

they're all awful, but what gets me really good are the ones where these kids attach a picture of their firm's logo along with the essay.

thanks Trevor, I wasn't sure which "Debevoise" you were going to. appreciate you clearing that up.

The KE office where I work, the recruiters encourage the summers to do this but not sure if it's localized or a firmwide effort. I have not been told that there's specific wording being handed out.

If you're an incoming summer, I, and most people I know, silently judge you for this--but I suppose there's no real harm done. At least you're better than influencers whose whole personality is that they quit (were pushed out of) Biglaw because they're superior to us peons and now work at a legal tech startup that promises to disrupt the legal industry through AI-based smart contracts.

I asked a friend who just finished his 2L summer, and he said most his friends were asked by their firms and provided suggested language. It was something they all talked about and he got the feeling that everyone laughed about it to each other, but secretly was more than happy to do so for the firm.

They're awful. A couple of firms—White & Case and Reed Smith I've seen so far—have graphics they've handed out.

I judge the ever living hell out of anyone who posts this self-aggrandizing crap.

Yes. I judge all of the new lawyers who post these.

Weird. Most? Ny firm definitely did not provide anything or suggest anything. Do the firms just assume everyone has linkedin?

Not sure how someone's disenchantment with an obviously bad system based on their personal experience is a judgment on you, but ok. I know plenty of people who got laid off or had offers revoked during COVID or the Great Recession or y'know, who just fell through the cracks because they took maternity leave and the partners in their group are weird about it.

Also, "peon", um, may not be a great term to use anymore...

1. the tech-y influencer posts don't suck b/c they're critical of biglaw. they suck b/c, like most LinkedIn posts, they're saccharine and self-congratulatory and insinuate that the author is doing w/e he or she is doing for altruistic, rather than commercial reasons (notwithstanding the fact that the person is like, an associate general counsel for Trillion Dollar Ad Behemoth or The Latest Blockchain Scam)

2. if you are, in your heart of hearts, actually offended by Anon's use of the word peon (you would be the first, to my knowledge), I'm sorry, on behalf of Anon. otherwise, let's leave the faux-outrage over innocuous, commonplace word choices for twitter

Somebody obviously isn't reading these posts, because all of these folks are "humbled." Definitely no self-aggrandizing at play.

Assuming your first point is what the other anon meant, that's fine. I've just seen a recent trend of dismissing people's shit experiences in biglaw as being sour grapes, particularly in light of the extremely hot lateral market and concern from firms' leadership about hemorrhaging more associates and taking a cuddlier view of associates as a result. My point is only that using today's immediate context as a barometer of how biglaw *is* is naive given history. Incidentally, this is also part of why I think the "I am thrilled to announce I am joining [insert BL firm]" posts are so awful--not only are they self-aggrandizing and insensitive, they're also dense to the extent sincere (and not firm-imposed).

As for your second point, I'm not outraged or w/e--just pointing out the fraught racial history of the term "peon" and suggesting maybe a different term for "stupid" is better, unless anon was using it in its historical sense, which may be slightly less problematic...idk, not the expert here. Chill.

I'm pretty sure KE encourages the posts and essentially says "IF you decide to make a post, here is a template for wording and an official logo jpeg so that there is some uniformity."

As someone who recently accepted a KE offer, they don’t do this, at least not in one of their large offices (NY/CHI). All of their offices are slightly different in recruiting though so it could be different at others.

I am so “humbled” by the opportunity to join [firm I will most likely leave in 2 years] as a summer associate 10 months from now (don’t worry, I’ll write another cringeworthy post when I start to remind you how humbled I am). It has been a lifelong goal of mine to work at this firm, and I’d like to thank God; the academy; my parents, who [insert some sob story]; and my LinkedIn mentors who helped me land a job (even though I’m top 10% at HLS and could’ve sleepwalked into this offer). I couldn’t have done this without any of you. I will make you proud.
