I was talking with a friend who is also in my practice area today and she had the same concern.

I’m not a corporate associate, and we’ve had a mass exodus of corporate associates lately, leaving our deal teams very busy and turning down work. My firm, like many, beefed up our corporate-support specialty group in anticipation of these deals. However, with corporate not able to staff many deals, and thus turning them down, I’m not all that busy.

My firm has a hours minimum for bonus that I should reach if I continue at my current pace. However, I have no new deals coming in at the moment, so I doubt I’ll maintain the pace.

Not looking for advice. Just wondering if there are any other specialists that are in the same position…

I (and others) had a very similar issue at my old firm. Since bonus was tied to hours, a bunch of people left in the last two months to go to very busy firms (me included). If you have large amounts of attrition, then ask the firm what they can do for you when it comes to $$$ otherwise lateral to a firm that is very busy.

If the firm is giving you grief even though they are the ones who don't have work for you then get out now. Don't negotiate. Or sit back and enjoy your free time. Depends on your long-term goals

Thanks. Want to clarify that the firm isn’t slow. I think my team just over-hired to meet corporate demand but corporate is bleeding associates too fast.
