Lateral Options (looking for L&E)

Hey everyone:
I’m a recent grad with aspirations to practice L&E law with one of the larger firms who specialize in that area. Frankly, I’m interested in any litigation based practice group, so I’m flexible.
I’m a former PD/DA who practiced criminal law for about a year and gained some trial experience. Since then, I transitioned to a midsized law firm and practice mostly workers comp defense and some liability matters. Going on 6 months here. I enjoy the work but want to focus on my next step without becoming pigeon holed.
I guess my question concerns timing. When should I apply? Should I aim for a regional firm before aiming for the larger firms? Is L&E a stretch? I’ve also considered Lewis brisbois type firms. I’m geographically flexible within my state which has a couple larger markets.
Mid tier school, just outside top 3rd grade wise if that matters. Any advice/experience with similar situation would be appreciated.
