I really want to work at one of the following: Cooley, Goodwin, Gibson, Wilson Sonsini, Fenwick, Gunderson, Ropes, Perkins Coie.
Am I being reasonable?

If you have ties to CA and are a decent interviewer, you should have no problem. All my buds who wanted SF/SV but had mediocre grades from MI were happy with their results.

SV is less competitive than SF, fyi.

Ties matter. Have you lived and/or worked in the region? If so, you should be fine. Transactional practices, in particular, are growing.

Because the firms & region you are looking at are somewhat sector-specific, I think ties matter less than a demonstrated interest/background in tech & transactional. I wouldn't let lack of ties hold you up if you can support a stated passion for the field.

Top 30 at a T1 school and got a few offers in the Bay with no ties. Previous experience in venture and tech. I think interest in tech/startups is more important than ties IMO. You should get multiple offers, especially, as a few posters have said, if you target SV for corporate work.

EC/VC is the bread and butter of Bay Area firms. Very transactional heavy (though not exclusively), just focused on a different stage of company life cycle compared to NY firms.
