Negotiating Offers

How has this experience been for others? I asked a firm to match signing bonus from another firm and remove pro-rated hours to hit full year end bonus this year. They had to take both back and said the latter wouldn't be an issue, but the first one seemed off market. How do you think firms take being countered? The counter was to a V5 to match a V15.
