Is it possible to lateral to the London office of a big firm as a 2nd year?

For visa reasons, I am contemplating a lateral move to London as a 2nd year. Transferring to a foreign office is not an option at my firm. My experience will be mostly M&A and probably no securities work. Is this even feasible?

It depends, but it's feasible. It helps to have a good resume (i.e. highly ranked current firm, highly ranked law school), but you're junior enough and as long as the market is still hot it makes you more attractive. Tell them you want to do capital markets work. It's not very believable, but at least it shows you know that's what will happen to you. Play up the international element and wanting to be abroad, even if it's actually for visa reasons. Not a dependable outcome, but certainly feasible.
