Pre-OCI 2021

Post by Gene_Either » Sun Jun 13, 2021 4:14 pm

Tis the season. Starting a thread for discussion. If you don't have grades yet go send nasty emails to your registrar.

Don't be crazy paranoid. Partners aren't browsing TLS piecing together anon information about grades and schools to find out if you applied/got a callback/are serious about their firm. You don't have to post your SSN but give some useful information so other people can assess.

In the interest of leveling the playing field, STB and Weil are probably the two firms most known for doing lots of pre-OCI in years past. If I were c/o 2023, I'd start my efforts there, then branch out to other V50ish firms (n.b. the other big V10 players don't do a ton of pre-OCI, IME).

Not if you have the right grades. I’d recommend applying everywhere including v10s, unless it’s obvious that your gpa doesn’t meet the cutoff.

Previous anon here. Top 10% at low T14.

How do you even go about securing early interviews? How do you know who's doing them?

You go to the firm website, go to careers/recruiting and follow directions on how to apply for SA positions. Normally, the firm will either have a link to use an internal application where you type in your stats and attach request documents (CV, cover letter, unofficial transcript, writing sample) OR it will be less clear and they’ll just have the recruitment department’s email address. If it’s the latter, you just email them all the same docs you would have in the first scenario. Follow up with the firm every two weeks and hope you hear back. You normally don’t hear back at all. Some firms will send you a rejection email. Even fewer firms will email you directly to express interest.

Normally, pre-COVID, you’d get a straight-to-callback invitation if they were interested and entirely skip the screener. You’d get flown in, do the full set of interviews, leave and get your offer/rejection within a week or two. I’m sure some firms are doing this all remotely still, so who knows how the process shifted. Some firms do reach out for a screener first or even have you do some strange personality test (White & Case). I applied to over 100 firms, got rejections from 30 (some well after the season was over), and heard back positively from 5 (within a month of applying).

Also, something I noticed: if you are diverse or have less than stellar grades, this is an incredible way to get your foot in the door even if you’re not at a T14. There is less competition generally. Make sure you schedule your interviews ASAP - especially before the more competitive students from your school (who chose to only do OCI) start interviewing.

How school/grade restrictive is pre-OCI in people's experience? Is this like exclusively the province of high-end HYSCCN students.

Been sending shit out and have the time to do so but want to gauge expectations

Not school-sensitive, but largely still grade-sensitive. I mean, you should be at a T50 or so to have a shot at this and be higher up in the class at a non-T-14 (top 5-15% was the range I saw with others). But I’m sure this can be equally fruitful for very well-credentialed candidates at T14s who bother to utilize this process.

Not anywhere near this restrictive. I know plenty of people at my lower T14 at around 3.3-3.5 who snagged plenty of pre-OCI offers (primarily NY). Pre-OCI in DC seems a lot more grades sensitive

The people I know around median at my CCN also made an effort to network with firms they applied to pre-EIP. Not sure whether it was necessary, but they probably wanted a plus factor to offset grades if needed.

Virtually every firm does pre-OCI hiring, and I'd especially recommend applying to firms that don't come to your OCI ASAP, as well as in markets outside of your home market (Milwaukee, Cleveland, Minneapolis firms aren't at your OCI and could care less when your OCI is if you're interested).
