Re: Pre-OCI 2021
My school discourages pre-oci, but doesn't forbid it. So I find myself knowing almost nothing about it. I also expected median grades, so I put it out of my mind. But then my grades hit top 15% at a T14. Should I be seriously considering doing pre-OCI at this point? Even for firms that will be at my school's OCI?

Re: Pre-OCI 2021
My school used to discourage it then got fucked in hiring this year and suddenly is all about pre OCI. Go for any firm that doesn't expressly tell you not to apply if they come to your schools OCI. Costs you nothing but time. If you get even 1 offer it makes your OCI experience infinitely less stressful, and probably lets you bid more ambitiously. You're top 15% at a T14 I bet you get some bites.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 1:21 pmMy school discourages pre-oci, but doesn't forbid it. So I find myself knowing almost nothing about it. Re: Pre-OCI 2021
From CLS, I know that Weil, DPW, Cleary, PW, and STB have all done a lot of pre-OCI in the past years. I’ve definitely heard of almost all the other NYC firms participating too, but I know for a fact those firms do a ton of interviews before EIP.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 11:58 amWhich firms tend to have the most pre-OCI movement?

Re: Pre-OCI 2021
This is key. The point of pre-OCI isn't necessarily to land your dream job / 1st-choice firm. (I mean, that could happen, you never know, but it's fairly unlikely.) Your real goal is to apply widely and hopefully land one (maybe two) offers. That allows you to cut down the number of screeners you do during OCI itself, and psychologically, helps you relax and perform better during OCI.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 1:24 pmMy school used to discourage it then got fucked in hiring this year and suddenly is all about pre OCI. Oh, ok, this actually makes a lot of sense. One last question here, how does timing work? For example, if you pre-OCI and do happen to get an offer, is that offer going to expire before you get OCI offers? Sorry I'm so ignorant about this, but clearly the careers office is purposely keeping us in the dark.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 2:18 pmThis is key. Depends on the firm. I think most will give you through OCI but some have a shorter time table.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 3:00 pmOh, ok, this actually makes a lot of sense. Yeah, pre-OCI offers typically are held open long enough to give you some time to run the gauntlet during OCI, but usually aren't held open for weeks and weeks and weeks.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 3:04 pmDepends on the firm. My school's policy states: "If an employer makes an offer to any student before the beginning of [OCI], through a resume collection or prior relationship, that offer should not expire until at least 21 days following the first day of [OCI]." Your school probably has something similar in place.
However, firms (frustratingly) can and do take a DGAF attitude to that policy, basically with an impunity. One of the large NY firms attached a 14-days-after-OCI window to my pre-OCI offer, which forced my hand (since the OCI screener → callback → offer takes longer than 14 days...even 21 days can be tough).

Where the hell is this the timetable? At my T14 callbacks start the day after OCI and offers are generally made the same day or the day after.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 3:48 pm(since the OCI screener → callback → offer takes longer than 14 days...even 21 days can be tough).

so my GPA second semester shot up -- 3.78 -> 3.98 and I jumped from top 15% to ~6% in class rank and (presumably - based on past cutoffs that have held steady for 4 years) graded onto law review. Official GPA/class rank is not released until Friday. Should I hit firms up now for pre-OCI or wait until the official information is out.
