I regularly get redlines at night from partners with the "Sent from my iPad" email at the bottom, which makes me think they are all using them.

Couple of questions:
1. Are they helpful beyond for just directly emailing a "hand" markup? I really only use track changes instead of hand marking my comments, so I don't need a tablet just for the sake of markups so wondering what else it helps with.
2. Do you have to get the firm to sign off on it and install some kind of security and stuff or whatever? I assume it's only helpful to the extent you can connect firm email to it, but can you do other things like open iManage and stuff like that or no?
3. I assume it would be most helpful for car rides, doing some easy/light work in bed like answering emails or reviewing certificates and other simple docs and things like that - do you all agree?

Any other positives/negatives from working with an iPad? I don't think my firm would give me one, so wondering if it's worth the cost and is a value add.

yes. I find it really nice for reading docs and blacklines on while laying in bed or a couch after sitting on a chair all day.

Can’t imagine not having one at this point.

I take call notes directly onto pdf redlines in GoodNotes, which makes for an easier markup on a dual monitor than a paper printout or pdf comment bubbles. Also means that I have my notes for every redline we’ve ever discussed with a client, which is helpful for reference.

Also use it as an endless legal pad. Hundreds and hundreds of pages of notes, all of which are even somewhat searchable despite bad handwriting.

It’s an expensive thing for note taking and reading, but given how much you earn, it’s probably worth $1k.

I was seriously considering this myself and this thread has lots of potential to convince me to buy one. My firm has $2,500 tech stipend so hope we get more experiences of using ipads.

Yeah! It’s pretty workable if you write even vaguely clearly.

Curious about getting one. Is it easy getting documents from your laptop onto it? The iManage is system sucks and on my phone I cannot get docs unless emailing to myself.

Following. As eluded above, its effectiveness probably depends on how easy it is to integrate the ipad with your work. It might be helpful to figure out if there's a way to access your firm's internal document database and to download relevant legal software onto it. My old firm is rolling out iPads for all of its lawyers and I've been thinking of getting one if my new firm doesn't provide.
