V10 NYC M&A or SV general corporate

I am a second year specialist (NYC v10) with offers to move within my firm to the m&a group or lateral to a top SV (Cooley/WSGR) general corporate group. The rub is that I’d be taking a class year hit with the SV gig.

Bonus for the SV position is that I would be working out of their LA office and can move back in with my parents to save on rent. Also think it’s nice to have SV type work while living in LA, but I’m not sure if having SV experience transfers to the LA/OC market if I wanted to eventually exit to another firm or in-house in so-cal.

A few questions -
1. Is it beneficial to get the NYC biglaw m&a experience on my resume if my goal is to end up in LA/OC? (In-house/biglaw/GC)

2. What are the benefits of a general corporate practice vs M&A? I would think general corporate is more transferable in LA/OC markets, but think the M&A exp probably ports over just as well coming from a top NY shop?

3. Any difference in exit opps between gen Corp and m&a as far as in house or GC jobs go?

Thanks!

I think your questions are a little off base.

1) what do you want your practice to be (M&A? EC/VC? CapM?)

2) where do you want to live

Simple as that, with a big emphasis on #2
