Lateraling from NY to CA

I'm a 3L that'll be working at a firm in NY. Over the past year, I realized that I really want to stay in CA long term. Do people often make that move? Is it hard to move to CA? I'm willing to stick it out in NY for a few years if I have to. Hoping I can get some insights here.

Rather than a general answer, you can probably get a relatively tailored answer with some additional information.
What practice area will you be working in? What firm are you at in New York (rankings-wise if you don't want to be more specific)? Does your firm have California offices? (If yes: does it have a more permissive attitude towards office transfers?) Did you go to law school in California (is that what you mean by "stay"?)? College? Are you from California? Do you have other ties (or do you have a partner/spouse with ties)? Are you at an elite law school? How are your grades/involvement?
