Lateral offer: what's negotiable and how do you do it?

Recently got an offer at a v100 firm and trying to figure out what I can negotiate (starting salary, signing bonus when none offered, pandemic special bonuses, full bonus at end of year vs pro rated, etc.) and how to go about doing it (ask HR/recruiting coordinator vs asking hiring partner directly). Any anecdotal experience would be much appreciated. Thanks!

My anecdotal experience is that base salary negotiation for a lateral associate is the least likely to bear any fruit. You'll have more
success negotiating a signing bonus, full EOY bonus eligibility for pro-rata hours requirement, and stuff like an extra week or two of vacation (if the firm isn't on an "unlimited" system) or immediate eligibility for parental leave.
I would start your conversation with the recruiting coordinator and see where it escalates from there.

Data point: At my V20 that is known for being pretty stingy, laterals are regularly able to negotiate full EOY bonuses with pro-rated hours requirements if their start date is ~5-6+ months out from the billable year end.
