Switching offices?

I'm a first year associate who has been remote since starting in November. I am currently positioned in one major market but as a result of Covid-19 my partner will no longer be able to move with me to where my home office is located. Is it normal/appropriate for me to ask if I can switch to another major market due to this? I'm also looking for other positions in that market and maybe will ask the question once I have that offer in hand.

I don’t think there’s a better time than now (pandemic flexibility) to bring up a possible transfer. Whether you want to wait on another offer beforehand is up to you, but I’d do it as soon as possible to get the ball rolling (depending on how amenable you think your firm/office is to intra-firm transfers). Also helps if you’re in a corporate group/specialty.

Thanks for the response, does anyone else have insight based on what they've seen at their firms?

This is firm and group specific. I’ve seen several people accommodated for a spouse/fiancé(e) - a girlfriend or boyfriend is a tougher sell. I had to move to a different location because of my spouse, and chose to tell the partners before I started looking, but as others posters said, that’s a personal decision. I personally didn’t want the partners to hear through the grapevine that I was looking to move.
