Do the types of matters you get staffed on as a first year matter (i.e., deal size) for the trajectory of your career?

Not in the way you are thinking about it. Try to get staffed on matters where you can get good substantive experience or with ppl who have a good reputation or with whom you would like to build a relationship, as that can all affect your trajectory and attitude.

Agreed with above post. Try to get staffed on matters with the people you want to work with and be trained by and whose work flows you want to be in.. ask around to get the inside scoop on who you should avoid (but obviously be more discreet than that).

No, deal size doesn't matter in your career as a junior or midlevel associate. The types of tasks you handled in the deals you worked on matter. Everyone knows that deal size is completely out of your control.

This. Deal size doesn’t matter but the types of skills you develop as a first year definitely do matter.

Staffing matters a lot, but not what you're thinking.
The types of deals you're staffed on and the people you're staffed with will likely impact your future at that firm. For example, if you just so happen to start off getting cap m deals with two seniors, there's a real chance you end up as a cap m attorney. It's hard to recognize as a first year, but these little things can influence your overall career. Alternatively, if Horrible Senior takes a shine to you for some reason, you may be stuck working on all their deals and hating your life.
I can say I didn't really know what kind of transactional attorney I'd end up becoming, but I knew I wanted to stay away from debt finance and PE, so deliberately avoided those deals and those people.
