First year in a practice group that is transactional, but interested in going into capital markets. I know that the group has asked for more bodies, and I am interested in making the switch. Do you know how I would go about doing this? Would I talk to the partner in my current group? Recruiting?

Did the group ask generally for more bodies, or are they trying to hire outside the firm? If it's been floated that they're looking for folks within the firm, talk to someone in CM and see what they're looking for (temporary help? permanent reassignment?) and if they're interested in taking you on, then see if they will smooth your departure from your current group. I wouldn't want to tell the folks I work with that I don't want to work with them any more UNLESS I knew that I had something else lined up. If you have capacity because your group isn't that busy, then it may be easier to "try out" CM - that would be an easier sell to the partners you work for ("I want to make sure I'm hitting my hours and CM is looking for folks to help, can I work on some projects with them until things pick up here"). But assuming you can't do both, check with CM first. At my firm recruiting/professional development would be very unlikely to be helpful in these types of scenarios, but maybe it's different at your firm. More helpful would be an associate in CM that you're friends with (if you know anyone).
