Do any of the v5 firms not offer associate positions to SAs who primarily worked in practice areas that don't need to be filled or are slow? Or if their interests don't match what the firms needs? Wondering if there's any differentiation on this point.

Do we have to be strategic when indicating areas of interest?

I doubt any would completely no-offer a summer, but they may offer you a position in a different group than the one you want. For example, fairly recently Skadden told some of the litigation summers in one of its non-NY offices that they would have to do labor and employment or restructuring. Unsurprisingly, they didn’t stay very long.

Not OP, but the obvious implication is that these people left on their own accord to do purely litigation.

Original anon here. I don’t know for sure but my impression is that they left to go to places that would let them do the kind of work they wanted.

My experience at a v5 says they try REALLY hard not to no-offer people. If there isn't room in the groups they are in, they get put in other groups. No one looks down on these people, but many of them leave quickly to do the work they are interested in. If you have the grades for a V5, you have the grades for 3L hiring, or to quickly lateral as a first/second year.

I was a Skadden summer at a non-NY office last summer, and they didn't assign summers to practice groups. People could indicate interest in certain areas, but everyone got assignments from every group. There were no "litigation summers." We were asked to rank our preferred practice groups at the end of the summer, but were also told that no one would be formally assigned until much later. Several people in last year's class told me their assignment wasn't finalized until right before starting. I had the impression this was the firmwide practice. Maybe it's a recent policy that was adopted in response to that situation.

V5s are essentially 100% offer rate, right? I'm sure they would reassign someone to M&A or whatever if they're otherwise competent.
