Lateraling BACK to NYC?

Hi all. 4th year M&A associate here who moved from NYC to another major market for the $$$ savings. Turns out I absolutely DESPISE it here and desperately miss NYC. Am I going to be at a severe disadvantage trying to lateral back? I'm still barred there so that shouldn't be an issue, but wondering if firms will think I'm wishy washy or not as sophisticated / hardworking an attorney (as unfair as that is) from my time in the other market. I also know that my firm won't let me switch offices. Would love to hear some experiences from people who've moved away and then back to NY.
Thanks.

This is why I never seriously considered moving to Houston/Dallas.

I did exactly this. Its totally fine.
Just be honest - no one will judge you and the people that are still living and working in NYC will feel vindicated that they resisted the urge to leave on so many occasions.

Hey OP, I did this and got a lateral offers back. It's especially convenient now because all the interviews are Zoom. I'd be honest, say you thought you wanted a move but when you got here, you realized it wasn't a good fit and you miss NYC. Sometimes you only realize how much you appreciated something until you've lost it.

Particularly during a pandemic when some people are saying NYC “is over” attorneys who stayed in NYC will be receptive to hearing this.

I did this, too. Wasn't a problem at all. Also, what are the chances you can just go back to your old NYC firm?
