I had a call-back interview for a V10 junior position about a month ago. The interview went well (from my perspective), but I never heard back from the firm. My recruiter informed me today that I am the only recent candidate who was interviewed that was not either rejected or given an offer, and prompted me to reach out to the head of the practice group (who I interviewed with) to follow-up.

Has anyone been in this position before? I think a follow-up email at this juncture probably makes sense, but am not really sure what to say. Part of me think that if the firm is taking this long to make a decision, maybe it's not the right fit. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

My guess is:

1. They aren't desperate to hire

2. They didn't LOVE you

So they're waiting to see what other candidates they get without rejecting you. It's like dating. You'd be fine, but someone better may come along.

Why is the recruiter not reaching out to his or her contact to ask on your behalf? I feel like that would be a better approach.

With that said, I don't think a follow-up with the practice group head would hurt. As for what to say, did you send a thank you note after you interviewed last month? If not, you could always just couch in terms of, 'Thanks for taking the time to interview me. I really enjoyed meeting you and learning about [x]. I'm excited about the prospect of joining [firm] and, with that in mind, I wanted to see if you had an update on my candidacy.' or something like that.

As for it taking a month with no word, I don't think that's a big deal. Hiring timelines, particularly given COVID, are all over the map right now and you have no idea what is going on behind the scenes that could be causing a delay.
