Should I transition to general corporate from a specialist group?

I am currently a first year who works in the funds group (Big Law NYC). I do get work in a lot of different sub-groups within this department, however, I only get work within my group and have absolutely no work with anyone outside of it. I don't mind the work. As of now, it seems that my job is to pay attention to detail and it is new so everything is still interesting.
My issue is that I am worried that I have pigeonholed myself in a specific area and so will have to do the exact same type of work long-term. Additionally, hours and predictability seem to be 100% based on luck/partner you are working with at the firm rather than practice area.
I have looked through a lot of people's accounts on LinkedIn and asked around for an idea of available exit options. My takeaway is that funds' exit options tend to pay well and the hours aren't too bad. However, you are tied to areas like NYC (not too worried with the spread of WFH) and being the funds or compliance guy rather than general counsel.
Any thoughts? If I do decide to make the move, when should I start to bring it up and how should I?
