Last year I got the comp letter in the mail. Other offices got theirs before ours so we already knew no one was getting raises. Let us know what your comp letters say. I'd be curious to know if the firm makes up for salary freezes last year.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jun 22, 2021 8:53 amAlso curious if anyone knows how it works. Do we get an envelope in our office? Will it be mailed because people are still remote?
Also, seconding that people are looking elsewhere if raises are not substantial. I think the partnership will be blindsided by the amount of associates with updated resumes ready to go.

Seconding this request if some folks get theirs early. Also, Brogan if you’re reading this, most folks are OUT if the same crap is pulled this year.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jun 22, 2021 3:11 pmLast year I got the comp letter in the mail. Yup. The alleged hostility towards JD mentioned in this thread earlier if anything understated how unhappy the associates are in my practice group. Around 80 percent say they will leave if we aren’t brought up to market.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue Jun 22, 2021 4:03 pmSeconding this request if some folks get theirs early. Also profits per partner went up like 20% last year while we got zilch in increases. The firm has the money to pay; it just doesn’t want to.
I’m out if I don’t get paid, and I don’t even have T14/HYSCCN credentials.

At least one major market office is giving salary letters in-office tomorrow.

I heard letters are coming out tomorrow in the LA office. Anyone else hear anything? Do they normally give a heads up?
Also, should associates go into the office tomorrow, or will they be mailed?

Minneapolis is distributing tomorrow. Office leadership told us to let them know if we want it mailed (if we’re still not going in).

DC is doing the same. Half the associates I know have their resumes ready to go if this raise doesn't match/come close to the Milbank scale.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Jun 24, 2021 12:11 pmMinneapolis is distributing tomorrow. Our office said pick up anytime 10-6 tomorrow. They usually go around delivering the letters late morning/early afternoon and I can’t imagine you won’t have it before 6.

So how did things turn out for everyone? I’m a JD associate who left within the last year and curious to know if I made the right decision.

DC/NY NLG. 220k.
Is new comp based on calendar year 2020 hours, or do they also look at 2021 hours (ie, January to June)?

Re: Jones Day Raise/Review
Below are some data from another thread. From what I've observed, except for SCOTUS clerks, JD keeps your salary, if you're in good standing with the firm, 5-15k above the market base salary to claim that they pay above "market," but once you factor in bonuses, especially as you get more senior, you'd be losing out in tens or hundreds Ks. If you underperform, they'd give you below market base salary to strongly hint/nudge that you should voluntarily leave.
Anonymous User wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 1:15 pmMid level in small market at around 300k…so not NYC market but definitely more than I thought I’d get and more than I’d get at most other places in my city.
Anonymous User wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 12:00 pmDC/NYC office. 2nd year, and I just got bumped to 235 (was expecting at least 250 based on reviews and market). Polishing up the resume now and mass mailing it out today.

Secondary market. Very pleasantly surprised. Our NLGs were raised to 220, same as major markets.

Do you mean that first years in your secondary market now start at 220?Anonymous User wrote: ↑Sun Jun 27, 2021 9:28 pmSecondary market. Very pleasantly surprised. Our NLGs were raised to 220, same as major markets.

I assume they meant current NLGs. If that’s the case, I’m guessing that incoming first-years are being bumped up to 205? Likely depends on what secondary market they’re in, though.

Anyone else willing to share data points? Talking to my colleagues it sounds like our secondary office has moved to the JD version of NYC market—basically NYC base +/- 20k or so, which obviously doesn’t account for full annual or COVID bonuses.

It sounds like JD routinely pays top of the market in secondary cities, where it’s seen as one of the best shops in town. And it pays slightly below (or egregiously below) market in first-tier cities like NY and DC. That’s basically the entirely thread.

Yes, with the asterisk that the pay gap in major markets becomes bigger over time (no surprise there). Beyond me how they have any midlevels and seniors left in NYC/DC/Chicago/CA.cheaptilts wrote: ↑Mon Jun 28, 2021 10:56 amIt sounds like JD routinely pays top of the market in secondary cities, where it’s seen as one of the best shops in town. Thanks—this is helpful. As my secondary office has gone (it seems) to NYC market, it’s funny to see the ways JD plays games with the bonuses. Aka a bit above market base but then no bonuses of any kind.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Mon Jun 28, 2021 1:51 pmDC/NY/LA NLG raised to 220kAnonymous User wrote: ↑Mon Jun 28, 2021 10:34 amAnyone else willing to share data points?
