It sounds like JD routinely pays top of the market in secondary cities, where it’s seen as one of the best shops in town. And it pays slightly below (or egregiously below) market in first-tier cities like NY and DC. That’s basically the entirely thread.

Yes, with the asterisk that the pay gap in major markets becomes bigger over time (no surprise there). Beyond me how they have any midlevels and seniors left in NYC/DC/Chicago/CA.

Based on how this round of raises went in my major market office, I'm sitting back and waiting for the flood of "Today is my last day, please keep in touch" emails from 3rd years on up

What were the raises like in your major market office? Basically go to market or so and ignore two years of bonuses?

Law360 and ATL are reporting current NLGs (Class of 2020) raised to $205,000 and the Class of 2021 raised to $202,500. As a member of the Class of 2021, a little bummed we're not getting $205,000, but hard to complain too much about this much cash.

Yeah, Class of 2021 should be getting ~$215,000. But this was my only option during OCI so, you know, whatever. If I don't like the firm I'll try to lateral 18-24 months from now.

You’re misreading this. What this means is that you will start in September 2021 at 202,500. On January 1, 2022, you will be raised to 205,000. Then on July 1, 2022, you will be raised again to a black-box amount that probably will be 220,000. If you don’t include special bonuses, this will put you $7500 behind market on December 31, 2022 or $5000 on June 31, 2023.

It wasn't at all clear to me that Class of 2021 gets raised to $205,000. Wish I were getting more (i.e. bonuses and market raises), but like I said, didn't have (m)any other options.

How do current JD associates feel about new NLGs being bumped to $210K, especially since a lot of associates had less than ideal raises?

Any idea what I can expect in Atlanta as a 4th starting in September? When would my next pay increase be and is this first increase where the black box starts? Trying to gauge how close to the new 5th year salary (i.e., $305 on nee DPW or even $280 on the old scale) I can expect when I’ll be Year 5 in January.
