K&E to Austin

K&E to open an Austin office "before the end of May," to focus on renewable energy and tech, and plans to bring on "multiple lateral partners and associates from corporate firms currently operating in Austin."

What do we think this means for the Austin market? What firms/practices are the obvious poaching targets?

My overly bold prediction: NRF's entire renewables practice switches over.

If KE pays the same lateral bonuses to bring associates to staff an Austin office as it did in Houston, there won’t be a more desirable spot in biglaw. Those were 30-50k signing bonuses (or more). Above market comp to live in Austin and get a glittering resume line.

Considering K&E has temporarily raised the lateral bonus to $50k, I'd be surprised if that isn't what they use to staff the Austin office. The firm is growing $400 million a year. That's 1/3 to 1/ the entire revenue of a good deal of V50s, per year. The firm is on an absolute tear.

Word is that Mark Browning of K&E’s SF M&A group will be leading the charge to Austin.

I was actually pretty stoked about the Austin office, but looks like it might be a pretty toxic crew all around.

Care to share any non-identifying details? Could be helpful for those considering a move.
