How early is too soon to lateral?

While I am happy to have a job, I am not as excited about my post-law school employment as I had hoped I would be. There is a very specific practice area that I have always hoped to do, but I couldn't land that during law school, and 3L recruiting seems dry.

How soon is appropriate, after starting this fall/winter, to reach out to a recruiter? Should I wait more than a year?

I am strongly *not* interested in clerking but am open to working at a specific federal agency, which occasionally hires junior attorneys, before going to a relevant law firm.

Technically, it’s only too early to the extent you can’t find a spot. Really, you can move within a year or so. Though 2-3 is ideal. If you move early you need to really make the second place last, however. So make sure to choose well.
