Hands up! Who has had success with splitting between two firms (NOT your 1L firm). Trying to negotiate a split seems impossible because we are remote.

I've accepted a split between a DC BigLaw firm and a DC lit boutique and had the same offer with multiple NY BigLaw firms. Generally, firms aren't going to let you split in the same city among peer firms, and most want you to spend the first part of the summer with them.

What was your strategy? One of the firms said they require 8 weeks. Did you ask recruiting directly or ask a partner ?

I asked recruiting, most firms have set policies. You can probably finagle some leeway in required weeks when splitting a NY Big Law job and a government gig, or a job in another location, but there is no way Cravath is going to let you split with DPW or something.

So did the firms you spoke to not have a minimum weeks requirement? I’m confused. Sounds like you are splitting with two firms in the same city, which I’ve heard is basically not allowed unless you had a 1L job

8 weeks and 4-6 weeks (I can choose my schedule). The litigation boutique is not considered a peer firm, so the split was allowed.

I did. Peer-ish firms in the same city. It was a pretty exceptional situation and I had to get a bit aggressive about it. I would recommend not bothering unless you have a really strong reason for wanting to split. But email recruiting and/or the person listed in your acceptance letter and explain the situation.
