Kirkland (LA) v. Covington (LA)

Very torn. I've genuinely hit it off with the 8 or 9 people I've talked to at Kirkland and it feels like home. Covington is really great in the work that interests me (investigations / enforcement), but I know that Kirkland also has a decent amount of that work. People have told me Covington is slightly more prestigious with better exits. Not a ton of interest in AUSA but dream job would be at SEC, want to stay in LA. Thoughts?

Covington is a great firm, but its LA office is pretty new and doesn't have an established reputation in the city yet. Kirkland's LA office will have comparable, or better, work. It also has more reach into other markets (should you ever decide to move). If you clicked with the people at Kirkland, then I personally don't really see the point in taking Covington, at least not in LA. But that's just my opinion.

There's zero reason to think Covington will have better exits than Kirkland in LA. In fact I think that statement would be true in DC only and no other market.

I actually happen to know that Covington has better connects to the SEC and would definitely be the better choice if that's what you're looking for!!

Another thing to consider is that you'll probably develop your skills faster at Covington with way more hands on experience at the smaller LA office of Covington - and doing top of the line investigations work will set you up better for an SEC job

Thank you for all the advice! I ultimately chose Kirkland. I realized that I've always been most happy because of the people I work with, not the substance of my work. Hopefully I'm not crazy and can still find a way to make it to the SEC one day!
