Generally looking to do corporate work with a potential interest in M&A and private equity. Should I just be looking at fit between these firms or are there more factors I should be considering? Any big pros and cons to any of them?

I think Weil is heads and shoulders above the rest for general corporate work and restructuring.

Weil, and it’s not even close.

The only other firm that shows up on “The Elite” in Chambers for M&A is Shearman, but I wouldn’t turn down Weil for Shearman. I interviewed with Shearman recently and got a sense that the firm is trying to grow its corporate practice again. Maybe in a few years it’ll return to its former glory, but right now, Weil by a mile.

For M&A, go to Weil. If you were interested in project finance/renewables/international work, I'd say Milbank. I think Shearman and Goodwin just aren't as strong of firms.

Weil would be a no-brainer here

There is no guarantee that you'll get the practice group you'll want at any of these firms, so you're best off picking the all-around strong firm, which here is Weil.

Shearman is still definitely the better shop for mega public deals, but Weil is an overall more diverse M&A shop with both good public and PE deals and a brighter future as a firm. Goodwin is fine if you want to do an extremely high volume of middle-market M&A. I wouldn't even consider Milbank in this context.

Every single person in my 100+ summer class at Weil got the practice group they wanted
