any input on Cooley corporate vs. DLA corporate in San Diego?

I have offers at both firms in their corporate department. Enjoyed speaking with both. I would like to do some sort of corporate work (fairly open to anything, although capital markets seems interesting IMO). Anyone have any insight into the offices down there? It's hard to get a vibe via Zoom interviews.

Take Cooley and don't look back. Congrats!

Thank you! Just curious - what makes you say this? Thanks in advance for your answer.

I work in San Diego and I've heard the same. Nothing specific. But Cooley is considered really good here, and DLA Piper is considered a fine place, but not mentioned in the same breath as Cooley.

Cooley is better on every single metric - prestige (whether Vault ranking or regional reputation), type of work & training, culture, business outlook, etc. DLA has been on a downward trajectory for the past decade or so and treading water at best.

So unless you REALLY clicked with DLA and didn't vibe much with Cooley people, then I might re-consider. But even then, unless it was the worst possible CB experience w/interviewers, I still would pick Cooley.

Thank you! I was learning towards Cooley as a gut feeling, but wanted some data to back it up, and this is exactly what I needed.

I'm in SD and I have no idea why anyone even consider DLA over Cooley. Honestly, for corporate work, it is really Latham or Cooley in SD.

You could replace SD with any market, and this would be true. DLA has done a very poor job at producing a rep beyond the Walmart of biglaw.

Check out the AMA I did for the SD legal market on here. Go with Cooley, especially since the SD office is growing pretty rapidly. DLA has a decent VC partner, but other than that, their presence is dwindling in SD. DLA is also just a legacy firm in SD at this point from the merger with Gray Cary back in the day.
