Need Advice From People Who Switched After 2L Summer

If I'm not happy with my 2L firm and plan on switching out, do I flat out decline on the return offer?

For those who switched firms, did you accept the 2L return offer as a safety while you looked around for a new job during 3L year?

Is reneging on a post-2L summer return offer viewed as badly (or worse) than reneging on the 2L summer offer itself?

For most big law firms, post-summer offers stay open until October (or something like that - it should say in the offer letter or you could ask your school's office of career services). That buys you some time. I've also heard of people asking their firms for more time to decide - even several months more. If you do well over the summer and they like you, they may be willing to give you more time. Obviously, ymmv.
