I mean US law firm with Canadian office with US-trained and qualified attorneys. What sort of firm are you at now and what year are you? If you're a midlevel at a V20-or-so firm doing finance work, it might be worth trying to lateral to a US firm with a Canadian office. If you're a midlevel general corp/finance associate lateraling to a Canadian office of a US firm (say in Toronto for example), what kind of work should you expect to be doing for the most part? A lot of Canadian clients raising capital in the States (for example, major TSX listed companies who are also listed on the NYSE). Reporting work for those companies. Handling US angle on anything cross border with Canadian co-counsel. IPOs of Canadian companies in the States. Those offices are very leanly staffed so you act “senior” quick — like third years basically leading $500M financings in the same way a 6th year in NY would. Can sometimes get looped into US based work (like if NY office is slammed and they need hands, they know you’re a third year who is as competent as a fifth year so you get put on some things that way).
