Would a firm be okay with me using their westlaw subscription to research for an article I am writing during my free time? I'm in biglaw.

Yes, there should be a separate code for non-billable use. I've never heard of anyone being scolded for Westlaw use. Just be careful before running searches and pulling documents outside the pricing plan (like district court filings, which are usually much cheaper on PACER anyway).
