Building a practice / book of business

Does anyone have any advice or tips for how you started to build your practice/book of business? I'm not starting a solo, I'm just going to a midlaw shop as a senior associate and looking for ideas in how to start building my practice.

I'm local to the area where our office is, so did you just reach out to old friends and constantly take people to lunch? Attend conferences or more formal networking events? What else has worked for you?

Well, to start, what is your practice?

Same. For me what has worked on it focus building out an early early stage practice of small clients that you think have perspective, and then growing them. This will give you your own book of trusted clients. You can meet these folks by becoming involved in university workshops/early accelerators/tech events etc.

In my experience its next to impossible to get work from a late stage company unless you are working as a service partner on that client (and that role sucks).

Would love to piggy back on this for L&E. Currently, I just have clients who come back and ask for me to handle additional cases or provide advice and counsel after I've handled a litigation case for them. But these are often clients passed on to me by a partner so curious about bringing in new clients and generally expanding book.
