When are people planning on moving to NY

For most, if not all firms, it is wfh. Are people generally moving into the city? Or, are people planning on staying at a city with lower living cost until we have to return to the office?

My NY (and DC) friends that left the city are not returning until they are required to be present in-office (only 3 folks, so just a few examples).

I'm an incoming biglaw associate in a non-NYC major market. I plan on working from home from a different state until required to be in the office. I'm not moving or even looking until I hear something like "starting on X date we expect associates to be in the office..."

I'm probably in the minority, but I'm moving to NYC in January. I started at a V10 in October and I can't stand working from home. I still live with my law school roommates and we're all working for various midsize/big firms (they're all working for SF/LA firms though), so it's really annoying for all of us to be working out of our bedrooms and to be on calls at the same time. Being on the West Coast, I'm ready to not have any more 6am meetings, even though I can't do anything "fun" in NYC. My office isn't requiring anyone to come in for several more months, but the office is open on a limited basis so it'll be nice to come in once or twice a week

I'm an incoming associate at an NYC V50 with a mid-January start date. I planning to start looking at apartments in early December and plan on moving early-mid January. I'm living with my parents rent-free right now, which is really fortunate, but working from their house - while technically possible - is just not realistic. Plus, having been stuck inside without any independence whatsoever is starting to take a real toll on my mental health.

Definitely get not wanting to being stuck at your parents' house, but you can airbnb anywhere.

Just think.. every month you spend at your parents not paying rent and making market salary is like 2 to 3 less months you have to work in Biglaw.

If you’re planning to move in to NYC, it’s going to be good for the next few months. I moved in pre-pandemic and I have family here (so no urge to leave right away).

Many places in Manhattan are offering several months of rent off (standard atm is about 2-3), and other perks. Just mentioning that will get you perks from stingier landlords. Don’t bother looking for a place in Brooklyn - you can get better in Manhattan (never thought I’d say that).

So, if you have a start date, look now.

My $.02

Silly question, but would you advise SAs to do this now too?

In response to the question "have most people left the city?": Almost everyone I know at big law firms has stayed in NYC or have returned in the past 2-3 months. They either have families or don't want to expose their parents to covid. To anyone starting biglaw now, definitely take advantage of living outside of NYC until the offices are fully open!

I’d modify that a bit. SAs can wait a few months. It would be silly to lock yourself down if you’re not to start By spring.

The big X-factor is that a second shutdown hasn’t been ruled out. On top of that, until the borders open up (a lot of NYC congestion, quality of life, are knockoff effects of tourism), the City isn’t going to be crowded anytime soon.

As someone said above, take advantage of not being in NYC now. If you’re looking (bec of FOMO, etc.), go ahead. But you won’t be hurt by waiting atm.

My $.02

Looser than before, but it'll be practice-by-practice, person-by-person. I haven't seen firmwide policies on this question before. I'm sure more people will be open to it going forward. I know some anti-WFH partners who are now used to it at least.

I hope this leads to WFH at least one day per week becoming normal/acceptable. Plz biglaw gods, give me that much.

I can't imagine going to the office four days a week at this point. Sounds like hell.
