Post grad hiring

When is it appropriate to ask a firm you are working for to hire you on post grad?
Background- I was working for a midsized firm in my hometown as an SA- it was cancelled- they paid me and then hired me on starting in August as a legal clerk intern thing (basically just a continued SA); they've hired me on for the year. I'd obviously like to work with them upon graduation and really like the firm. Is there an appropriate amount of time to wait to ask about post grad hiring or do I let them approach me? Thanks y'all.

Have they told about the possibility of a return offer when you were hired as SA? If yes, I would focus on having good work products and wait at least by the end of this year. If not, you may need to approach HR or have more informal conversations with partners you are working with about the full-time position. But even in this case, you may need to wait by the end of this year or early next year so that they can figure out how things will go in regard to the pandemic and recession as well as review your potentials. I recommend you keep looking other places. One of the best approaches would be telling them you got offers from somewhere else but have strong interest in joining the firm blah blah.

Clearly they like you. Keep working hard, show you're committed, and have a great attitude. They'll come approach you when the time is right. I was in a similar position as you when I graduated. I was working for a firm and not even as their SA turned regular law clerk. Was just hired as a law clerk during school year and then they converted me when I passed the Bar Exam with no heads up by the Partners or HR.
