NYU Grade Cutoffs

Hi everyone, I was recently admitted to NYU as a transfer student, and now that OCI is pushed back, I was wondering how badly someone would have to do at NYU to not have a chance at biglaw (NYC). It would also be helpful if anyone knows what certain GPA/class rank you need for V10, V20, V50 etc tier firm (generally).

You'll be judged by your prior school.

Well, only partially since next semester will count.

True, from my observations. Top third or w/e from the lower T14 still leaves you stuck at a V50. OTOH, top 5-10% at Fordham does remarkably well: V10 or so.

I don't remember what the permutations are, but it's something like V100: 3.00, 3.07; 3.11 (1-2 B+s); V50: 3.17, 3.21, 3.27 (3-5 B+s). 3.27 or so should be the median.

(Career Services says "3.3" is the median, but they're likely rounding up.)

Generally, K-JDs with low grades underperform.

I had a 3.66 when I transferred to NYU. The only firms at OCI I felt my GPA was too low for, and that I had a bid interview with were Latham, Sullivan and Skadden etc. I didn't even go for Cravath/Wachtell. Had callbacks at 9ish firms. Ended up choosing between Debevoise and Kirkland. Went with Kirkland. You'll do fine!! Nobody looks down on transfers at OCI (except a few of the students that I met, but they're irrelevant anyway).

Things will likely be tight because of the economy. Try Pre-OCI / reaching out to firms if you can. Anyone who gets a job in biglaw this cycle should be very happy tbh.

Accidentally wandered in here, but I wanted to comment that top 1/3 at a lower T14 very easily makes you competitive for V25. V50 was for kids in like the top 3/5. If you had like a 3.2 or higher, you were competitive for a V50, and our mean was ~3.3.

But now OP would also have a semester's worth of NYU grades, so the calculus would change slightly

Didn't target NYC so take this with a grain of salt, but I think around median would at least be good for a V50, at least in prior years. I know people slightly above median who have gotten the less selective V5s. OCS has more precise data, but it's somewhat skewed by high GPA people who interview with firms as back ups.

At my different CCN, this wasn't the case. Several transfer students in my OCI cycle got offers at v10 shops. (CSM, Skadden). Many more got offers in the v25 (Weil, Debevoise, Jones Day).

Don't think I realized how far OCI would be pushed back but not sure how much 2L grades will matter. Just need to show that you can keep up with the non-transfers (hint: you can). And when I say judged by your old school, I should add that you'd get a bump for the new brand name degree that you will receive.
