Pre-OCI This Year

Post by zg43 » Fri Jul 03, 2020 3:54 pm

What are people's predictions on pre-oci this year? I've been hearing that some firms have said that they are going to be interviewing later this summer/throughout the fall. My schools career service also said they think this is going to be happening. Has anyone had any luck yet/know anything else about this?

My school has said that firms will be doing a smaller round of Pre-OCI this year starting in late July/early August depending on how firms manage incoming associates + current summers. Will probably be limited to top students from top schools (moreso than usual), with everyone else having to wait for a second semester of grades and "regular" OCI in Jan/Feb.

Would be great if this forum could make a list of firms actively recruiting/ hiring in the late summer.

Just transferred into a "top" school. I'm not at all familiar with the pre-OCI process . . . is it considered verboten to ask one's OCS for tips and pointers about pre-OCI? Like you are supposed to sneak around Career Services, or do you do it under their official auspices?

Poster above: attitudes vary. It won't hurt you to ask, but if they say don't do it, ignore them. There will be no consequences for you; it's not like OCS is going to try to hurt your chances of getting a job. That said, it's not under their "official" auspices, you will be reaching out personally to firms.

Speaking generally: my NYC v20 anticipates doing limited pre-OCI recruiting starting after summers leave (early August). It will be "smaller" (uncertain on what that means, sorry) and focused on top candidates with strong interest in particular groups that we have had difficulty recruiting (so e.g. general lit will have a hard time compared to exec comp or soft IP.) Not to say that you shouldn't try it for general lit, but that it will be much more of an uphill climb.

I have heard similar takes from friends at other NYC firms ranging from v10-v50.

Seconding this. Anyone who tells you not to hustle to network or for job opportunities is not giving you that advice for *your* best interests. You do what you gotta do, and know that if you're not doing it, there's someone else who is. Your OCS will probably give you the same tips and pointers you expect anyways, but worth asking. Maybe they can connect you with students/alums who are great at that kind of thing.

My firm has done some pre-OCI interviewing, but I am not aware of any offers being made yet. Rather, folks are being put on a short list and will likely be given priority/immediate call-back when official OCI starts.

If your grades & school are good enough, the answer is probably "all of them." Go put in some shoe leather; call up your network and start emailing recruiting people. It won't hurt you to try and be told that they're aren't doing pre-OCI / not get extended a pre-OCI look.

Would the soft IP recruiting be for 3L recruits, too? If so, can I DM you?

I don't know, sorry. My firm has historically been pretty soft on 3L recruiting and more willing to poach good juniors from hard-to-get specialist groups. My sense from talking to my buddy in our soft ip group is that soft ip people are generally hard to find at the nyc v20 level relative to demand, especially if you are interested in transacational soft IP.

That said (and others please correct if I'm wrong -- would this fuck over anon at their current firm?), a discreet email to someone in our transacational soft IP group would be would be well received. I'd start blanketing with emails.
