Furloughed to Laid Off

Wondering whether any firm has made the move to lay off associates who are currently furloughed.

Has not happened to anyone I know who's furloughed, but the consensus seems to be that it could be the "next" step.

I'm not sure I agree with that consensus. Maybe it is "cheaper" for firms if furloughed associates who are kept on the rolls unpaid (but with benefits) find new jobs and quit -- versus the cost of lay offs, assuming three months' severance is standard.

Not trying to be a fearmonger. Just wondering whether what I'm hearing is representative.

Furloughed associate here, haven't been laid off yet, but I agree that it's the next step. Going into month 3, I doubt there is enough work to keep the associates currently on payroll busy, and they aren't going to bring us back just to twiddle our thumbs. Also, I doubt they would pay us a severance. Best case scenario is that they keep us on long enough until we all find other jobs, which I hope by now most of us have at least started looking.

Furloughed associate as well, I expect it was to not pay severance. Going into month three, not expecting a recall, have been job searching like crazy. I'm anticipating the lay off coming in August.

Update: Furloughed associate here that just receive notice of official termination, can't say it wasn't unexpected, but at least they are offering severance.

How much severance and were you being paid while on furlough?

They haven't sent the official severance info yet (wanted to wait to allow me to "process the news") but I wasn't paid while on furlough.
