2L—Are grades taken into account for offers?

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Apr 07, 2020 12:37 pm

During the Great Recession, did firms take into account grades, rank, etc. when making decisions on who to offer? If firms decrease their offer rates will grades be a significant factor?

I have read people say it both ways. Different firms will act different ways is probably the answer. Either way, social fit, responsiveness, and quality of work probably outweigh any changes in grades short of a precipitous drop.

Anecdotally, there were rumors of grades being cited as a factor in no-offers, but my suspicion is that the grades were just used as a convenient "objective" excuse when the real reason was a no-offer quota that needed to be met, coupled with decisions on who to cut being made with some amount of subjectivity (fit, quality of work, etc.).

The safe bet is certainly to keep the foot on the gas pedal during 2L. There's even a tangible benefit - there's definitely been cases of all three years of law school grades being considered by some firms in evaluating junior/midlevel laterals.
